Dr. Michael Anthony (Tony) Cappello is a Senior Managing Health Scientist and Epidemiologist at Cardno ChemRisk with over 17 years’ experience in a variety of scientific and leadership roles. He has provided technical public health, epidemiology, environmental health and disease control consultation to federal, state and local health departments, municipalities, state and local elected officials, boards and commissions and private businesses. Prior to joining Cardno ChemRisk, Dr. Cappello served as the Director of Disease Control and Public Health Response and as the State Environmental Epidemiologist for the State of Colorado. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director for the Northeast Colorado Health Department, and in 2014 was appointed by the Governor of Colorado to the State Board of Health, where he served as Board President from 2015 to 2017.

As an expert public health epidemiologist, Dr. Cappello has led state and local disease control/outbreak responses, conducted community health assessments and created public health improvement and response plans and actions. He has also performed microbial and environmental health exposure assessments, provided expert public health and epidemiological testimony before the Colorado state legislature and implemented local and state public health policies and regulations.

Dr. Cappello has expertise managing multidisciplinary teams in designing, conducting, and interpreting epidemiological studies and developing actions and programs in response to, and in anticipation of public health concerns and exposures. He is practiced in applying epidemiologic principles and using statistical analysis to inform evidence-based decision making in public health practice and community health assessment, including evaluating and implementing improvements in epidemiologic surveillance systems and creating sustainable programs to enhance routine data collection and review.
